The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City as outlined by the plans of the Central Labor Union. The first Monday in September was designated as the day to celebrate Labor Day. It's a creation of the labor movement and dedication to the social and economic achievements of American workers and reflects a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to bring strength, prosperity, and well-being in the U.S.
