For a little over two years Josh Fattal and Shane Bauer were held in an Iranian jail because of they are Americans. Their ordeal began in July 2009 along with their fellow hiker Sarah Shourd, (who was released last year) as they were hiking together in Iraq's seeming peaceful Kurdish area along the Iran-Iraq border when Iranian guards detained them. The hikers have maintained that they are innocent and that they might have accidentally gone into Iran.
