Business advice first time business owners wish someone had given them.

If you’re just starting out your business for the first time it’s important you understand and seek advice on several issues. As a new business owner it is always a good idea to find other entrepreneurs and mentors to help you with valuable tips and advice. Some great points to remember as you are starting out are:

1) Stay focused and do one thing at a time! Stay focused on your primary business opportunity and goals and don't get side tracked with trying to add new services and products to your business before you even master your initial business plans. Don’t become the person know for offering one product this week and next month your offering something else. You will lose creditability with customers and collegues fast!

2) Don’t start a business just because you are trying to make a quick buck. Fully understand and love what you do. If you don’t love what you do or even truly understand your service or products how can you be successful. You have to build a business around your strengths and talents.

3) Perfect your 30 second pitch. When you first meet another business owner or potential client, you need to be ready when they ask that famous question,”What do you do?, How can you help me?". You need to be ready with a brief, clear, easily understandable overview of your services. And remember to always be able to adjust your pitch to fit the person you are speaking to.

4) Did you even make a budget! Of course you have to spend money to make money, so how can you expect to start your business if you don't know where the money is coming from to market and promote your service or product, let alone maintain offering your service or product. Also you need to remember to maintain low overhead and manage your cash flow. Don’t get the big fancy office if you only have enough money to pay for two months rent and you don’t have any clients!

5) Don’t exaggerate what you can do. Don't promise your service or product can offer a particular outcome unless you are 100% positive you can back it up because you will quickly be without clients and referrals.
